Do I need a visa to visit Bhutan?

How long does visa approval take?

Visa approval is normally issued within around five working days after all required documents and payments have been received.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least two to three months before travel. If you plan to visit during major festivals or peak seasons, book even earlier to secure flights and accommodation.

Is Bhutan safe?

Yes. Bhutan is one of the safest countries in Asia with very low crime rates, making it an excellent destination for solo travellers, couples and families.

Can I use credit cards?

Many hotels and larger businesses accept Visa and Mastercard, but cash is still useful for smaller shops and rural areas.

What currency is used?

The official currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (Nu.), which is pegged to the Indian Rupee.

Is internet available?

Yes. Most hotels provide Wi-Fi and visitors can purchase local SIM cards after arrival.

Can I drink tap water?

Bottled or filtered drinking water is recommended throughout your visit.

What language is spoken?

Dzongkha is Bhutan’s national language. English is widely spoken in the tourism industry.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended. Dress modestly when visiting monasteries, temples and other religious sites.
