Arrive Paro – Thimphu   ·   O/N: Thimphu 

Fly into Bhutan with spectacular Himalayan views — Everest visible on a clear day. Land at Paro (2,250m) and drive around two hours to Thimphu, following the Pa Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers through picturesque villages and terraced rice fields. In the afternoon, visit the 51.5m Buddha Dordenma statue at Kuenselphodrang, overlooking the valley, then Tashichho Dzong, the fortress housing the Golden Throne Room, government offices and the summer seat of the Central Monastic Body. Evening at leisure.

Explore Thimphu   ·   O/N: Thimphu 

Visit the National Library, home to a vast collection of ancient Buddhist manuscripts and the world’s largest published picture book, then Choki Traditional Arts School, where disadvantaged youth train in traditional crafts — try your own hand at a painting lesson. Afternoon at the Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory, where paper is made by age-old methods, and Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s curious national animal. Evening stroll through Thimphu town’s shops and cafés.

Thimphu – Punakha (75 km)   ·   O/N: Punakha 

Visit Bhutan Post to create a personalised postage stamp of yourself, then cross Dochula Pass (3,100m), passing the 108 Druk Wangyel memorial chortens and, on clear days, a sweeping Himalayan panorama. Descend through changing landscapes to Chimi Lhakhang, fertility temple of the ‘Divine Madman’ Lama Drukpa Kuenley. After lunch, visit Punakha Dzong, set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu — one of Bhutan’s grandest fortresses and winter seat of the Central Monastic Body — and cross its 230m suspension bridge nearby.

Punakha – Wangdue – Phobjikha (70 km)   ·   O/N: Phobjikha 

Drive via Wangdue Phodrang into the glacial Phobjikha Valley (2,900–3,200m), scenic winter home of the endangered Black-Necked Crane. Visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre to learn about conservation efforts, and Gangtey Monastery, an important Nyingma seat closely tied to the Pema Lingpa tradition. Afternoon at leisure in this peaceful valley (crane sightings are best November–March).

Phobjikha – Bumthang (180–200 km)   ·   O/N: Bumthang 

Morning walk through Phobjikha’s marshy roosting grounds, home to the cranes in winter, before an early lunch and a long, scenic drive east over Pele La Pass (3,420m) and through Trongsa town, dominated by its historic dzong. Cross Yotong La Pass (3,400m) into the Bumthang valley; in Chumey, watch local women weaving the distinctive, colourful Bumthang yathra textile.

Explore Bumthang   ·   O/N: Bumthang 

Bumthang is regarded as one of Bhutan’s most sacred regions. Visit Jambey Lhakhang, believed founded in the 7th century by Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo; Kurjey Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s holiest sites, linked to Guru Rinpoche; and Tamshing Lhakhang, an important Nyingma monastery tied to treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa. Visit also Wangdichholing Palace museum. Later, visit a local Swiss farm to learn about Bhutan’s dairy traditions and sample locally made cheese.

Bumthang – Mongar (190–200 km)   ·   O/N: Mongar 

Drive into the Tang Valley to visit Mebar Tsho, the Burning Lake, where Pema Lingpa is said to have discovered sacred treasures from the waters. Time permitting, visit Pemachholing Nunnery, where young women receive religious training. Continue east across Thrumshing La Pass (3,750m), the highest point on Bhutan’s East–West Highway, descending dramatically through changing vegetation to Mongar.

Mongar – Trashigang (90–100 km)   ·   O/N: Trashigang 

A scenic drive through the mountains of eastern Bhutan to Trashigang, historically the region’s most important centre. Afternoon visit to Trashigang Dzong and the town.

Trashigang – Trashiyangtse (55 km)   ·   O/N: Trashiyangtse 

Drive to remote Trashiyangtse district. Visit Chorten Kora, built in the 18th century by Lama Ngawang Loday and modelled on Nepal’s Boudhanath Stupa — an important pilgrimage site, especially during its annual festival. Continue to Trashiyangtse town, known for traditional woodwork and papermaking, and explore its distinctive eastern Bhutanese culture.

Trashiyangtse – Mongar (150 km)   ·   O/N: Mongar 

Visit Trashiyangtse Dzong before the scenic return journey to Mongar. En route, visit Gom Kora, a revered temple beside the rock where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated and subdued a demon — an important pilgrimage site during its annual festival.

Mongar – Trongsa (190–210 km)   ·   O/N: Trongsa 

Cross Thrumshing La Pass (3,750m) once more through the spectacular mountain landscapes of central Bhutan, continuing through the highland Ura Valley, one of Bumthang’s most picturesque areas, en route to Trongsa. Evening at leisure.

Trongsa – Wangdue (130–140 km)   ·   O/N: Wangdue 

Visit Trongsa Dzong, one of Bhutan’s largest and most impressive fortress-monasteries, built dramatically along a ridge above the Mangde Chhu gorge and central to the founding of the Wangchuck dynasty. Visit also Ta Dzong watchtower for sweeping valley views. Continue west to Wangdue Phodrang.

Wangdue – Haa (130–150 km)   ·   O/N: Haa 

Continue west via Thimphu and Chuzom to the Haa Valley, one of Bhutan’s least-visited and most unspoiled regions. Visit Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple), central to the valley’s spiritual life. Enjoy a hands-on cooking experience preparing hoentey, a traditional buckwheat dumpling filled with turnip leaves, cheese and butter, followed by a relaxing medicinal hot stone bath.

Haa – Chele La Pass – Paro (65–70 km)   ·   O/N: Paro 

Choose a morning activity: a panoramic hike across the Haa Valley, a forest trail in search of the elusive red panda, or, subject to season, fly fishing. Drive to Paro over Chele La Pass (3,988m), one of Bhutan’s highest motorable passes, with views to Mount Chomolhari and Jichu Drake on clear days.

Explore Paro   ·   O/N: Paro 

Visit Rinpung Dzong (‘Fortress on a Heap of Jewels’), one of Bhutan’s finest examples of traditional architecture, and cross the wooden cantilever bridge below. Continue to Ta Dzong, now home to the National Museum of Bhutan and its collection of paintings, textiles, weapons and religious artefacts, and to 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang. Enjoy lunch at a farmhouse, with the chance to try archery, Bhutan’s national sport. Afternoon at leisure in Paro town.

Paro – Taktsang Monastery   ·   O/N: Paro 

The journey’s highlight: drive to the Ramthangkha trailhead and hike (2–3 hours uphill) to Taktsang Monastery, the Tiger’s Nest, dramatically perched on a cliff high above the Paro valley — where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated in the 8th century. Afterwards, visit Drugyel Dzong, a historic fortress associated with Bhutan’s defence against Tibetan invasions, and unwind with a traditional medicinal hot stone bath.
