Bhutan is unlike many other holiday destinations. Visitors come for its Himalayan scenery, living Buddhist traditions, historic dzongs, villages, festivals and the opportunity to experience a different pace of life. But before planning an itinerary, it is important to understand the costs.

The total cost of a Bhutan trip has two parts: applicable government charges, especially the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), and the services you select for your journey. The SDF is not a hotel or tour-package payment. Accommodation, meals, guides, vehicles, flights and activities are additional unless a quotation explicitly includes them.

This guide is designed for first-time visitors, couples, families, solo travellers and groups. It explains how costs are calculated, provides practical examples and helps you compare quotations without overlooking important expenses.

1. What Makes Up the Cost of a Bhutan Trip?

There is no single fixed price for visiting Bhutan. A short cultural journey using comfortable hotels will have a different cost from a longer private tour with luxury resorts, specialist activities or travel to more remote valleys.

ExpenseHow it affects your budget
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)A government fee generally calculated per eligible visitor, per night in Bhutan
Visa or entry permitDepends on nationality; most visa-requiring tourists pay a USD 40 application fee
AccommodationHotel category, room type, season and number of nights
GuideLicensed guiding services and any specialist arrangements
Vehicle and driverGroup size, vehicle category, distances and travel days
MealsFull board, breakfast-only or meals paid separately
FlightsDeparture city, airline, travel dates and availability
Entry fees and activitiesMonuments, museums, workshops, hikes and optional experiences
Personal expensesInsurance, shopping, drinks, tips and incidentals
Useful distinction: A tour quotation may bundle many of these items together. Always ask whether the quoted price includes the SDF and visa fee, and whether international airfare is excluded.

2. Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in 2027

The SDF supports Bhutan's sustainable development approach. It is charged separately from tourism services and is an essential part of most international visitors' budgets.

Current standard SDF rates

Visitor categoryStandard SDF per night
International adult, excluding Indian nationalsUSD 100
International child aged 6 to under 12USD 50
International child under 6Exempt
Indian adultINR/Nu. 1,200
Indian child aged 6 to under 12INR/Nu. 600
Indian child under 6Exempt
Important for 2027: The USD 100 nightly SDF incentive for most international visitors is scheduled through 31 August 2027. Do not assume that this incentive will apply to trips beginning later in 2027. Rates, concessions and nationality-specific arrangements must be confirmed for your actual travel dates. Special arrangements may apply to eligible Bangladeshi visitors and other qualifying categories.

How to calculate the SDF

SDF = applicable nightly rate × number of nights × number of eligible travellers. Children may qualify for a reduced rate or exemption.

For example, two international adults staying for seven nights during the current incentive period would pay USD 1,400 in total SDF (USD 100 × 7 nights × 2 adults).

Nights in BhutanOne international adultTwo international adults
4 nightsUSD 400USD 800
6 nightsUSD 600USD 1,200
9 nightsUSD 900USD 1,800
10 nightsUSD 1,000USD 2,000
14 nightsUSD 1,400USD 2,800

Examples above use USD 100 per adult per night and exclude all other costs. They apply only when that rate is available for the traveller's dates and circumstances.

For details about child discounts, exemptions and how the fee works, read our Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee guide.

3. How Much Does a 5, 7 or 10-Day Bhutan Trip Cost?

Travel itineraries are usually described in days, while the SDF is generally calculated using nights. A five-day holiday often means four nights, a seven-day holiday often means six nights and a ten-day holiday often means nine nights. Check the actual arrival and departure dates before calculating fees.

5 days / 4 nights

Typical route: Paro and Thimphu

Adult SDF: USD 400

SDF + standard visa fee: USD 440

Ideal for a first introduction, cultural highlights and a Tiger's Nest hike.

7 days / 6 nights

Typical route: Paro, Thimphu and Punakha

Adult SDF: USD 600

SDF + standard visa fee: USD 640

Allows more time for temples, scenic drives, local culture and unhurried sightseeing.

10 days / 9 nights

Typical route: Western Bhutan plus Phobjikha or central Bhutan

Adult SDF: USD 900

SDF + standard visa fee: USD 940

Better suited to travellers seeking deeper exploration and longer cultural experiences.

The figures above are government-fee examples for one international adult under the USD 100 incentive, not complete tour prices. The visa fee applies only where a tourist visa is required.

Five-day itinerary: a short introduction

A five-day trip can combine Paro's temples and traditional architecture with Thimphu's cultural landmarks. Many visitors also plan a hike to Taktsang, commonly known as Tiger's Nest Monastery. Four nights keeps the SDF lower, but there is less flexibility for long drives or extra activities.

Seven-day itinerary: a balanced first visit

A week is often a good compromise between budget and depth. Travellers can experience Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, with time for Dochula Pass, Punakha Dzong, local markets, monasteries and a scenic valley walk. The extra nights increase the SDF but allow a more relaxed itinerary.

Ten-day itinerary: explore beyond the main valleys

Ten days can accommodate Phobjikha Valley, longer walks, rural experiences or a journey towards central Bhutan, depending on road conditions and interests. Transport costs may increase because of longer distances and additional travel days.

4. How to Build a Realistic Bhutan Travel Budget

A useful travel budget should show government fees separately from the cost of your holiday arrangements. It should also distinguish confirmed prices from estimated spending.

Example: two adults travelling for 7 days / 6 nights

Budget componentHow to calculate it
SDF for two adultsUSD 1,200 at the current incentive rate
Visa fees for two visa-requiring adultsUSD 80
Hotels for six nightsConfirmed room rate × six nights, allowing for room occupancy and taxes
Guide and vehicleActual quote for the complete itinerary
MealsIncluded in package or estimated separately for two people
Monument fees and activitiesBased on places and experiences selected
International flightsActual airfare for both travellers
Insurance and personal spendingSeparate allowance based on your preferences

Government-fee subtotal in this example: USD 1,280 for two adults. The complete trip price is higher because it also includes the selected tourism services and travel expenses.

Why no single package price is shown here: A reliable full-trip figure needs actual hotel rates, travel dates, room arrangements and a guide-and-transport quotation. Generic package prices can be misleading if they omit SDF, flights or meals. Ask Lhayul for an itemised quotation based on your dates and group size.

What affects the total most?

  • Length of stay: more nights mean additional SDF and hotel costs.
  • Accommodation category: comfortable hotels and luxury resorts can have very different rates.
  • Group size: two or more travellers may share vehicle and guide costs.
  • Route: longer drives and remote destinations increase transport requirements.
  • Season: popular festival periods can affect hotel and flight availability.
  • Inclusions: meals, entry fees and optional experiences may be included or charged separately.

5. Hotel and Accommodation Costs in Bhutan

Bhutan offers a range of accommodation, from practical tourist hotels to boutique properties, traditional stays and internationally recognised luxury resorts. The best option depends on your priorities rather than a fixed hotel category.

Comfortable tourist hotels

These are suitable for travellers who want a clean, comfortable base for sightseeing. Compare room size, location, heating, bathroom facilities, meal arrangements and recent service standards.

Boutique hotels and traditional stays

Smaller hotels and approved farm-based accommodation can offer a more personal experience. Some feature traditional Bhutanese design, local food and opportunities to interact with hosts.

Luxury resorts

High-end resorts may offer exceptional settings, spa services, premium dining and personalised experiences. They can account for a large share of a holiday's total cost.

When comparing hotel quotations, ask whether the rate is per room or per person, whether breakfast or all meals are included and whether there are supplements for single occupancy or peak dates.

6. Guide and Transportation Costs

Most visitors benefit from arranging a licensed Bhutanese guide and suitable transport. Bhutan's mountain roads and cultural sites are easier to navigate with local expertise. Applicable guiding requirements depend on the visitor and activity, so confirm the arrangements for your itinerary.

Guiding services

A guide does more than accompany you to attractions. A good guide explains history, Buddhist customs, architecture, local traditions and appropriate behaviour at sacred sites. Specialist trekking, photography or other activities may require different expertise and arrangements.

Vehicle and driver

Transport costs vary by vehicle size, number of travel days, driving distances and route. A private car or SUV may suit a couple, while a family or group may require a larger vehicle. Check whether fuel, driver accommodation, parking and airport transfers are included.

Can group travel reduce costs?

Yes, some costs can be shared. A couple or group may divide the cost of a vehicle and guide, although the SDF remains an individual government fee unless a specific concession applies. Solo travellers should pay particular attention to private transport and room supplements.

7. Bhutan Visa and Entry Permit Costs

Most international tourists need to arrange a visa before travelling to Bhutan. The standard tourist visa application fee is USD 40 per person for visitors who require one. The fee is separate from the SDF.

Indian nationals follow an entry-permit process rather than the standard tourist visa procedure. Travellers from Bangladesh and the Maldives have specific arrangements that should be checked for their nationality and travel dates.

Before paying for flights, confirm the required documents, validity of your passport, visa or permit arrangements and any applicable entry conditions. A local tour operator can help coordinate the process.

8. International Flights and Getting to Bhutan

Paro International Airport is Bhutan's main international air gateway. Flights to Bhutan are often a substantial additional cost, especially for visitors travelling from Europe, North America or Australia who must first reach a connecting city.

Airfare depends on route, travel dates, seat availability, baggage allowance and fare conditions. Travellers should also budget for possible transit accommodation or other expenses where connections require an overnight stop.

Arriving by road from India

Eligible travellers may also enter Bhutan through authorised land border crossings. Road travel involves different logistics, including entry permits, onward transport and potentially vehicle-related charges. Check the current rules before choosing this option.

How to compare flight options

  • Check the full journey, not only the flight to Paro.
  • Compare nearby travel dates when possible.
  • Allow sufficient connection time.
  • Review baggage, cancellation and change conditions.
  • Coordinate arrival and departure times with the planned itinerary.

9. Meals, Entry Fees and Personal Spending

Many Bhutan tours include some or all meals, but there is no universal rule. Confirm whether your quotation includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as bottled water, snacks or special dietary arrangements.

Bhutanese food is an enjoyable part of the experience. Visitors can try dishes featuring red rice, vegetables, cheese, chillies and regional specialities. Some itineraries also include farmhouse meals or cooking experiences.

Other possible costs include museum and monument admission, traditional hot-stone baths, handicraft workshops, drinks, souvenirs, travel insurance and optional activities. Gratuities for guides and drivers are discretionary, not a government fee.

10. Bhutan Trip Cost for Indian Tourists in 2027

Indian travellers have a different standard SDF rate and entry procedure. The standard SDF is INR/Nu. 1,200 per adult per night, with a 50% child discount for ages 6 to under 12 and an exemption for children under six.

Length of stayOne Indian adultTwo Indian adults
4 nightsINR 4,800INR 9,600
6 nightsINR 7,200INR 14,400
9 nightsINR 10,800INR 21,600
10 nightsINR 12,000INR 24,000

These are SDF-only examples, not full tour prices. Confirm the current rate, permit arrangements and any vehicle-related charges before travelling.

Accommodation, meals, transport, guide services, attraction fees and personal spending remain additional. Visitors travelling in their own vehicles should verify applicable vehicle permits and charges rather than assuming that private-car travel is free of additional costs.

11. Does the Travel Season Affect the Cost?

Yes. Bhutan's spring and autumn periods attract visitors interested in pleasant sightseeing conditions, festivals and trekking. Hotel and flight availability may be tighter during popular dates. Winter can be attractive for some lower-altitude itineraries, while summer brings lush scenery and monsoon conditions in many areas.

Seasonal prices are not uniform. A hotel may offer different rates for a festival week, while another property may keep rates unchanged. It is better to compare real quotations for your preferred dates than assume a particular month is always cheaper.

Travellers planning to attend a festival should arrange accommodation early and allow for traffic, crowds and local scheduling changes.

12. How to Manage Your Bhutan Travel Budget

  1. Choose the right duration. A focused itinerary reduces unnecessary hotel nights and travel days.
  2. Travel with a companion. Sharing transport and guide costs can improve value.
  3. Use comfortable hotels where appropriate. Premium accommodation is optional, not a requirement for every visitor.
  4. Plan a logical route. Avoid long detours that add vehicle time without improving the experience.
  5. Check what meals are included. A lower headline price may exclude daily expenses.
  6. Compare flight dates. Flexible arrival and departure dates can offer more choices.
  7. Prioritise experiences. A well-paced journey can be more rewarding than visiting the maximum number of places.
  8. Request an itemised quote. This is the best way to compare options fairly.

Bhutan no longer uses the former mandatory minimum daily package tariff as a fixed all-inclusive tour price. Nevertheless, travellers must still budget for the applicable SDF and comply with current tourism requirements.

13. How to Compare Bhutan Tour Packages

Two tours with similar prices may include very different services. Before booking, request a written quotation showing:

  • Exact travel dates and number of nights
  • Hotel names or categories, room arrangements and meal plan
  • Guide and vehicle arrangements
  • SDF and visa or permit charges
  • Airport transfers and transport between destinations
  • Monument entry fees and included activities
  • International or domestic flights, if applicable
  • Any single-room supplements, child pricing and optional costs
  • Deposit, cancellation, refund and payment terms

For families, include each child's age when requesting a quotation. For groups, specify whether travellers will share rooms. For travellers considering late 2027, ask for confirmation of the applicable SDF rather than relying on an earlier estimate.

Planning tip: Ask for the total per-person cost and the total group cost, with government fees and flights clearly identified. That makes quotations much easier to compare.

14. Frequently Asked Questions About Bhutan Trip Costs

How much does it cost to visit Bhutan in 2027?

There is no single total. Your cost depends on the SDF applicable to your dates and nationality, visa requirements, hotel category, transport, guide, meals, flights and itinerary. Request an itemised quotation for a reliable total.

Is Bhutan expensive compared with other destinations?

The nightly SDF makes Bhutan different from many nearby destinations. However, accommodation and tour services can be tailored to different comfort levels. A cultural holiday need not use luxury resorts.

Is the SDF included in hotel prices?

Not automatically. The SDF is a government fee separate from hotel accommodation. It may be included in a tour operator's total quotation, so check the inclusions.

How much SDF is payable for a seven-day trip?

If the itinerary is seven days and six nights, one international adult pays USD 600 at the current USD 100 nightly incentive rate. This does not include the visa fee or other travel expenses.

How much does a five-day Bhutan trip cost?

A typical five-day, four-night trip has USD 400 in SDF for one international adult at the current incentive rate, plus a USD 40 visa fee where required. Hotels, guides, vehicles, meals and flights must be added.

What happens to the SDF after August 2027?

The USD 100 incentive is scheduled through 31 August 2027. The rate applicable after that date should be confirmed under the government policy in force for your travel dates.

Do children pay the same SDF as adults?

Under the current standard arrangements, children aged 6 to under 12 receive a 50% reduction and children under six are exempt. Confirm any special conditions for your family.

Do Indian tourists pay the USD 100 SDF?

No. Indian nationals have a separate standard SDF of INR/Nu. 1,200 per adult per night, subject to the applicable rules.

Do I need to book an all-inclusive tour?

There is no longer a mandatory fixed-price daily package tariff. However, tourism regulations, including applicable licensed-guide requirements, still apply. An organised tour can simplify arrangements.

Are international flights included in Bhutan tour prices?

Not always. Some quotations cover only arrangements inside Bhutan. Confirm whether the flight to Paro is included before comparing prices.

Is it cheaper to travel as a couple or group?

Often, because guide and vehicle expenses can be shared. The standard SDF, however, is normally calculated individually.

What is the best trip length for a first visit?

Five to seven days can cover major highlights in western Bhutan. Ten days or more provides more time for additional valleys, cultural experiences and a slower pace.
