Bhutan: A Journey I'll Never Forget
Travel experiences by an independent traveller
Bhutan had been on my list of places to visit for a long time, but nothing quite prepared me for what I would experience.
An Unforgettable Arrival in Bhutan
Our adventure began with a flight from Bangkok to Paro via Kolkata. The approach into Paro was extraordinary. Flying between towering mountains and descending into a narrow valley was an experience in itself. Even before we landed, I knew this journey would be different.
Over the following days, we discovered a country of breathtaking scenery, remarkable traditions and a peaceful atmosphere that is increasingly difficult to find elsewhere.
Discovering Bhutan's Natural Beauty
One of our first outings was a walk through the forests around Dochula Pass. Colourful prayer flags fluttered in the mountain breeze, and the surrounding landscape was incredibly peaceful. Bhutan was already becoming one of the most beautiful countries I had ever visited.
Punakha Dzong was another unforgettable stop. Its magnificent architecture, beautiful courtyards and setting beside the rivers made it one of the highlights of our journey.
Cycling Through the Bhutanese Countryside
We also explored the countryside by bicycle. Cycling at Bhutan's altitude was certainly challenging, but the scenery more than made up for the effort. Riding through quiet valleys, passing traditional villages and crossing beautiful bridges gave us a completely different perspective of the country.
Experiencing Bhutanese Culture and Food
In Thimphu, we enjoyed seeing how Bhutanese traditions remain part of everyday life. We watched people practising archery, explored the local market and learned more about Bhutan's unique approach to development and happiness.
One evening, we dressed in traditional Bhutanese attire and enjoyed a local dinner. The food was delicious, particularly the momos, which quickly became my favourite. The famous chilli-and-cheese dish was a little too spicy for me, but it was all part of the experience.
The Memorable Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery
The most memorable part of our journey was undoubtedly the hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery.
The climb was demanding, but the occasional glimpses of the monastery through the clouds kept us going. Finally reaching this remarkable place, perched high on a cliff overlooking Paro Valley, was something I will never forget.
There was something truly special about standing there after the long climb, surrounded by mountains and centuries of spiritual history.
Why Bhutan Left a Lasting Impression
Looking back, what stays with me most about Bhutan is not just its extraordinary landscapes. It is the sense of peace, the preservation of its traditions and the opportunity to experience a way of life that feels genuinely different.
Bhutan is one of the most beautiful and fascinating countries I have ever visited, and the memories of this journey will stay with me for a long time.
